S.O.D. "America" by Bill Callahan
7/3/2015 This video is somewhat genius!! He's been around for 24 years but I don't think I've heard any of his tunes. Anyone else? It comes from his 2011 album "Apocalypse" which employs a 10 piece band. Lo-fi is the genre that Callahan mainly uses which is defined as a lower quality of sound. To achieve this, either the quality of the recording is degraded or certain equipment is used.
This artist started with the genre simply because he had cheap instruments and equipment and often played on untuned guitars. After a while he just stuck with it. He also explores the genres of alternative country and underground rock. He is unconventional to say the least using different chords but the same chord progression through almost every song with a structure that never shows a verse-chorus pattern. His delivery is dispassionate and his lyrics are somewhat complex or weird. To me that means many of the people on this list will start listening to him. I'm going to start today. He has made 17 albums of which 12 are under his band name Smog, and the rest under Bill Callahan.
